Ordinarily most people tend to have cats and dogs as pets around the house. Ferrets, like cats and dogs, are carnivores, however they have certain demands and requirements that are different from your regular pets.

You should never keep your ferret locked up in any sort of cage unless for a particular reason for a short space of time. Like cats, they should be free to roam around the house as much as they wish. However, you need to make sure that you arrange things so that they do not end up hurting themselves, curious as they are.

They are primarily creatures of habit, but will often feel like doing different things at different times. A good owner will spend time playing with them and embracing their personality and should never consider this a chore.

At the right time of year when the weather is sufficiently dry and light, then it is possible to take your ferret out for walks. They can quite easily withstand long walks of several kilometres before needing to be carried home.

Ferrets need friends. Its probably best to have more than one ferret as a pet as they need a lot of attention. However, don’t assume that all ferrets will get along. Like cats, some will like playing together and others will tend to fight.

When a ferret passes on it can leave a large hole in your life. This is another reason to have more than one, as over time a ferret you know and love will have built up a significant personality. Replacing it with a young kit will not be the same so it is always better to have other ferrets that you have experience with.

Ferrets can be expensive to purchase, and therefore it is a good idea to get insurance on them. Expensive as they are, you may just find yourself saving money elsewhere with all the time you devote to them rather than spending on other things. Make sure that you also have food and water available for ferrets at all times so they can come and go as they please. Unlike certain dogs, they will not gorge themselves if left to feed as and when they desire.

It is not necessary to bathe them, as they clean themselves and their fur can become more beautiful without your interaction. If you don’t let them run a lot outside, it is also important to cut their nails as they may begin to grow a little too long. Much like cats, they can also be litter trained without too much problem.

If you really want a fun and playful, curious and mischievous pet then look no further than getting a ferret. They are slightly alternative to your regular cat, but will provide just as much, if not more, entertainment.
