The history of scooter invention

Sometime in mid 70s Japanese giant concern Yamaha analysts predicted the decrease in demand for bikes and started searching for new inventions and new markets. They had a question of possibility to “put on wheels” those who would never thought of that before like housewives. Well, after every idea comes certain action and in 1977 the Japanese market saw the 2-wheel vehicle that shortly became very popular. So, how they managed to get it done so quickly? They just recalled the idea of scooter where all the working parts are under the driver’s seat – very popular vehicle in 40s-60s. This design provided not “riding” seating as in bikes but “sit still” seating allowing using the vehicles even the ladies with skirts. The developed facing (mini-body) protected the driver’s clothes from getting dirty. But the advantages were not limited to it. As it appeared, most consumers (ladies at the first place) could hardly get the way of using clutch and shifts. Besides, it was hard to get the driver’s license due to bureaucracy.

As the result the mini-bike with fully automatic control (accelerator, brakes, starter and front and turning lights switches) was created. To make the riding more safe the engine working volume was decreased to 50 cubes.

Later the whole Europe suffered the “scooter mania”. Not only young housewives but also people on retirement started riding these vehicles as they gave lots of advantages in cities with constant traffic jams. Clerks, businessmen and even city mayors were riding scooters though students and teenagers remained their biggest fans.

For teenagers scooters soon became the same everyday attribute as the player. See, many inventions of European and Japanese companies are designed especially for the youngsters.

It was natural that simple copying of Yamaha concept could not go all the time. And the first new scooter invention became Yamaha BW S entering the market in 1990. It was complete “outland scooter” for its wide wheels allowed the ride not only by roads but also by parks and forests lanes. Since then we see a constant increase in scooters modifications.

So, modern scooters can be divided by several categories:
The first groups consist of 1st generation scooters-rollers with 9-11” disks and no special features.
The second group is formed with popular in Europe “outlanders” – quadrocycles.

And the apogee of scooters development is a hybrid of scooter and bike with 14-16” wheels, sport bikes design and slightly increased engine volume compared to the original ones.

The creation of such hybrids and the desire of producers to make out of compact scooters something bigger for tall Europeans leaded to scooters’ increase in size and in price. That is why today we may see the vehicles of famous brands priced over $4000. Surely, there was a market niche for producers from China, Korea and Taiwan that produced scooters of the same quality but 2-3 times cheaper.
